The Glory that was Greece: coming soon to your TV screens but meanwhile here are some views of my odyssey to see all aspects of the Acropolis on a sunny November day.
View of the Acropolis looking NW
View of the Acropolis from the Pnyx, the seat of democracy.
AAhhh...a beautiful part of the world that I hope to see someday. Thanks for the pictures. I take it you just surrounding the Acropolis and didn't hike to it? How is the rennovation going?
Good idea of putting the cover on the seat...no accidental claw marks.
We were just about to head up to the Parthenon when I spotted a gate open that allowed us to go onto the opposite hill from where the 2nd photo was taken.
I visited Athens in 2000. Seeing the Acropolis for the first time at dusk was and remains one of the most memorable sights of my life. Just spectacular.
I stare in amazement at these photographs... Imagining the Parthenon as it was initially built, with a huge statue of that great Greek God, Abraham Lincoln, sittimg inside it.
Even better than the Acropolis at dusk is the view of the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion - this is mini version of the Parthenon* sitting on a cliff by the sea and is truly magnificent at sunset.
I've eaten crocodile but never crocs. Crocodile was, er, "interesting"; texture like pork, taste like a rather bland portion of something tasteless. I'll not repeat the experiment.
I won't comment on the Vespa. I finally saw the cat.
On a serious note. To stand upon ground where so much history has happened. I could probably stand in one place for days just taking it all in. How cool!
Maybe Greece should consider flogging some of this stuff to help ease its financial woes. For instance those statues would look lovely next to the (ahen) Elgin Marbles. (starts running away very fast...)

Lovely. I haven't been there for a long time. Nice Vespa, too. Your header pic is mouthwatering by the way, need to get Greek takeout now.

ReplyDeleteI did not realise until now that the Abraham L. was in fact a cross dresser. A lot of it went on.
Best wishes, N

ReplyDeleteFacebook has a page dedicated entirely to IKEA meatballs.
Crocs(tm)? can you eat those too? Must be a bit chewy like octopus.
I'll look out for them next time at the IKEA restaurant.

ReplyDeleteGreece, one of those places near the top of the list of places to visit. I love the pictures (including the header!). One of these days....
