Bus Lover's Holiday

A Leyland Bus picking up passengers outside Mosta Dome

Mrs Nikos had some good fortune and willingly consented to come with me on my almost regular five yearly bus spotting holiday to Malta, that little gem of an ex British naval base skulking in the Mediterranean sea just below Sicily.

An AEC bus picking up passengers at Cikewwra having made it up the fill from the Gozo ferry terminal in the outstanding heat.

An Airbus A 320 at Luqa airport - another of Nikos' famed night-time ramp shots.

Another AEC bus moments before running over some Scuba divers.

A Leyland Tiger Cub with a misleading Volvo number plate light ornamentation at Valetta bus main station .

A Bedford Supreme and an AEC Commander pose side by side at Valetta main bus  station.
Heaven knows what this is  - the name plate has fallen off.

This soulless vehicle looks like something from the Iron Curtain.

Mrs Nikos pets a stray cat as she is fed up with looking at obsolete British buses.

Mrs Nikos concludes the purchase of an AEC bus to convert into a camping car.

  1. Dear Nikos:

What the hell is this with you and buses? I haven't been on a bus — the lowliest form of public transportation — in 20 years.

  2. DBY463 is a 1955 Bedford SBO with a Barbara body.

DBY345 is a former Cynon Valley 1968 AEC Reliance, with Willowbrook B45F body. But retro fit headlights I think.

    Hold very tight please.......

  3. Bus tour? Tour by buses or tour of buses?

I love the look of the EBY536. Did you really get one to convert?? Carry the motorbike on the back?

  5. Ah buses! A transport of delight indeed. And I can still vividly remember my first experience of a double-decker. I always go on top when I can.

  6. I love old buses too - over here we still have many with the intructions not to eat, smoke, leave by the wrong door, spit on the floor, etc in German/French/Swahili depending on where from whence they were procured in 1975. And how lovely to catch a glimpse of Mrs Nikos.

  7. Camilla - yes but a word of warning as the sun is so fierce in Malta one needs to take precautions.
Gadjo - you are too kind - I shall pass your comments to my senior management for due consideration.

somehow I think she is buying cheap into slave labour. The last remaining one being on the No 62. Look at the anguished face.....

ps obviously not a Double Decker in sight so we cannot start singing the DD's theme song

  9. I haven't been to Malta since 1997. Good to see they still have those great buses. Do they still have Ford Anglias?
